The Big Move

April 28-29, 2014

The NASA SCA, or Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a modified 747, had spent the previous few months being partially disassembled on the outskirts of Ellington Field. With tail section, wings, landing gear, and engines removed, and everything loaded onto a 1000-ft. caravan, the SCA made its way down Highway 3 on the night of April 28, parking for the day on E. Commerce St., near the intersection of NASA Parkway and Highway 3. The last leg of the journey to Space Center Houston came the following night.

Nick White, one of the drivers of the caravan, took the following pictures on the first night of the convoy as the SCA inched its way south.

Looking up at the nose of the 747 at the front of the convoy.

A side view of the SCA, with a CenterPoint truck in the foreground

A boom shot, taken (I assume) from one of the cherry-pickers or cranes that were used to move traffic lights and overhead power lines out of the way

This view shows more of the big crane in the background than the first picture

Part of the tail section follows the fuselage

Only a single light showing on the cockpit windows, but the multi-wheeled transport vehicle is well lit.
