New Orleans at Night

During our river cruise on the steamboat Natchez in New Orleans, I snapped this picture looking upriver to the skyline of New Orleans and its reflection on the water. It was a very pleasant evening.

The Kemah Boardwalk

It's September, and I'm getting tired of the heat, humidity, and rain, and the pictures of storm debris on the Welcome Page that remind me we're still in hurricane season. So I decided to take a step back in time to reexperience some nice weather for a change. Here is the famous Kemah Boardwalk on a pleasant Spring afternoon. Definitely looking forward to Fall, if it ever arrives.

After the Hurricane: Tree Limbs Everywhere (part 2)
Here's another photo of the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, showing all the tree branches and leaves strewn across the front yard. All the debris got carted off, eventually, and the street is now back to normal. (Maybe I'll show that in an upcoming Picture of the Week.)

tree debris

Monday, July 8, 2024
After the Hurricane: Tree Limbs Everywhere
Hurricane Beryl stripped a lot of leaves and branches off the trees in the neighborhood, leaving debris scattered across yards and streets. We took pictures of the carnage before we rolled up our sleeves and raked up the mess.

the back yard fence asunder

Monday, July 8, 2024, around 11:45 a.m.
Another Hurricane, Another Dismembered Fence in the Back
Hurricane Beryl partially disassembled the back fence, and scattered tree limbs everywhere. We have a 24-foot gap in the fence, seen here, plus another 8-foot gap on the other end (to the left of the photo). The fallen sections are still relatively intact, and just need to be reattached. However, we lost one fencepost, behind the black diamond crepe myrtle at center-left; it snapped off at ground level. At the time this picture was taken, it was still pretty windy.

at Bay Area Park

Looking Across the Bayou from Bay Area Park
Another picture from the photosafari to Bay Area Park shows Mud Lake on a nice Spring day, tall grasses on the near bank, and dense trees on the opposite shore.

Meyer lemon tree

Thursday, May 30, 2024
The Meyer Lemon Tree Bears Fruit
Although the sapling was planted in 2020, this is the first year that we've seen fruit on the tree, and it seems to want to make up for lost time. Some of the branches are so heavy with fruit that they are hanging straight down. Looking forward to making limoncello come harvest time.

bay area park bench

Tuesday, March 26, 2024
A Pleasant Place to Sit
A nice Spring afternoon prompted a photo safari to Bay Area Park, where I found a nice park bench somewhat in the shade near the gazebo and garden. No time for me to enjoy the seat, however; I had more pictures to take!

Birthday Morning(s) Breakfast
Family members, in town for Lauri's 60th birthday pizza party, enjoy breakfast of Mornings Kolaches on the patio on a very nice day. From left, Janet, John, Mark, Lauri, Jill. (Eileen is not in the shot because she took the picture.)

railroad bridge

Monday, July 4, 2022
Firth of Forth Railroad Bridge
Our cruise in the summer of '22 brought us to Queensferry, Scotland (near Edinburgh) on Independence day, where our tender sailed under the famous Firth of Forth Railroad Bridge, a Victorian-era monstrosity that was, as you can see, way overengineered. (Probably in response to the previous bridge's collapse while a train was on it.) On the right edge of the photo, you can see the bow of our cruise ship at anchor in the firth. Incidentally, the bridge is listed on the registry of Unesco World Heritage Sites, so we were able to cross that one off the list.

maximum coverage

Saturday, October 14, 2023
Partial Solar Eclipse
We were too far east to witness the annular eclipse, but were treated to 89% coverage at maximum just before noon, which is right about the time this picture was taken, using our makeshift card-stock pinhole viewer in the back yard. Fortunately, we had clear skies (unlike the rest of the family). The solar disc is a bit blurred, as we opted for image size over clarity, but the camera is in focus, as you can see by the sharpness of the edge of the card stock.

minute maid park

Thursday, July 13, 2023
In the Outfield at Minute Maid Park
The highlight of our day in Houston was the 2-hour tour of Minute Maid Park. As we neared the end of the tour, we made our way down the third baseline toward the fence, where I shot this panorama (later stitched together from 3 photos) of the field, showing everything from center field to the Crawford Boxes. Lauri can be seen at far right, trudging along the foul line. (We weren't allowed on the grass.)

hibiscus and petunias

Thursday, July 13, 2023
Exploring Discovery Green
One of our "staycation" excursions took us into downtown Houston. In the morning, we walked around Discovery Green, the park immediately west of the George R. Brown Convention Center, enjoying its many tree-lined walkways, recreation areas and entertainment venues. Here, oak trees shade a wide sidewalk leading east to the GRB.

More Backyard Color
The middle of Spring offers up opportunities for capturing color in the back yard, whether from the yellow hibiscus, pink petunias, or the garden flag hanging above the back bed. It also helps that we had just weeded the area.

dinner on the patio

Sunday, April 16, 2023
Dinner on the Patio
The weather was nice enough on Easter Sunday that we could eat on the patio. Not that this was our 'official' Easter dinner; that meal—grilled lamb kebobs—had been served the day before, to avoid having a big Easter breakfast and dinner on the same day. On the menu: Alaskan halibut in an Alexander sauce with shrimp and crawfish, served over Cajun rice, along with haricots vert sauteed in garlic butter, and all of it accompanied by a nice Italian white. It's too bad we don't have more days like this.

A Spring Day in the Back Yard
A brief spell of nice Spring weather had us working in the backyard on Easter weekend when I captured this view looking roughly west from the eastern corner. There was still some work to do, but overall the yard and beds were in pretty good shape. We just needed some more weekends like this one (which we didn't get).

lilies

Monday, March 27, 2023
Asian Lilies in Bloom
The arrival of spring usually means a shot of some recent planting or blooming, and this year is no exception. We ran across these colorful lilies at Lowes, and just had to snag a few to add some much-needed color to the front of the house. I like the little streaks of vivid red against the bright yellow.

golfoss

Wednesday, June 29, 2022
The Gold Falls
One of our stops on the tour of Iceland's "Golden Circle" was the spectacular waterfall known as Golfoss, or Gold Falls. Not sure why it's called that, but it's quite a sight, with a torrent of water plummeting into a steep, narrow chasm then making a hard left turn. It's another example of the fractured topography of Iceland, and why that country is so interesting to visit.

Heading to Our Excursion Bus
It was nearly impossible to bypass (or ignore) the crazy ship's photographer each morning as we filed off the cruise ship to catch the bus for our excurion. Here, he catches Lauri, me, and Jill on the pier at Molde, Norway, before our ride to the Atlantic Ocean Road (part of which is shown in the inset at bottom center). Yes, it's Norway, and yes, I'm in t-shirt and shorts (although I did regret that a few hours later).

white trellis on the fence

Monday, April 18, 2022
The New Trellis Installed
Okay, the trellis wasn't all that new. We'd picked it up a while back, and it had been on its side against the back fence long enough to get dingey looking. So I cleaned it up, fixed the loose slats, and repainted it. Then affixed it to the fence using just 3 eye screws and 3 small tie-wraps, so that it can be easily removed or relocated if needed. It now sets off the crepe myrtle quite nicely in the center of the yard.

Hawaiian Sunset Hibiscus

Sunday, May 1, 2022
New Hibiscus Blossom
Not only was Lauri experimenting with a new variety of hibiscus (after The Big Freeze took out the previous plant), but was also trying out the camera features of her new smartphone. Here, a close-up of the blossom from a "Hawaiian Sunset" hibiscus shows the striking colors in the gradiation from bright yellow fringe to deep red at the center.

The Woodpile Replenished
We used up our supply of firewood during The Big Freeze of February 2021, when the power was out and the fireplace was the only source of heat. So the woodpile has been looking a bit meager for a while. Cue the landscaping crew, who came by on February 8 to prune the pecan tree. I asked them to cut the tree limbs into segments sized for the firepit, and they stacked the wood in our new log holder seen here. Bring on the cold; we're ready!

new back fence

The Fence Replaced
The previous picture showed the back fence torn down by the tropical system in mid-September. Here, the contractor has finished construction of the new fence on a cool, clear October morning. Looks nice. The most noticeable difference between the old and the new is that the pickets are attached on the outside, so the railings are no longer visible to the folks on the jogging track. Which provides extra security as well.

Storm Damage

Another September 14, another storm damage assessment. Hurricane Nicholas took out a good portion of the back fence overnight, giving us a view of the runoff in the gully. That's okay; the fence needed replacing anyway. It was on the to-do list for Spring 2022; we just have to move the date up a bit. The rest of the house and yard were unscathed.

Family Fishing Trip

Our first day of fishing near Glacier Bay, Alaska, saw gorgeous weather as brother Terry and nephew Jason park on the transom during the transition from the halibut area to the salmon grounds. We bagged 5 halibut, 3 coho (silver salmon) and a sockeye (red) that day. The rest of the family fared even better in the other fishing boat.

Celebrating 20 Years at First Class

May 11 marked Lauri's 20th anniversary at First Class Child Development Center. To commemmorate the occasion, her boss put up this huge sign at the side of the road for all to see. (There was also cake and balloons, inside.) Lauri poses behind the M, giving a pretty good idea of just how tall the letters are.

Southwest 737 on approach
Saturday, April 24, 2021
Rush Hour at Hobby Airport

When the wind is from the north, our back yard provides a clear view of the planes on final approach to Hobby, the vast majority of which are Southwest Airlines 737s like this one. At certain times of the evening, when the sky is clear, the dark blue of the Southwest livery all but disappears into the background, making for an interesting photo. (We didn't get a picture of that, alas.)

live oak sprouting
Friday, March 19, 2021
Welcome to Spring!

Signs of Spring are everywhere, with the bright new leaves of the neighborhood live oak trees the most obvious. Live oaks drop all their leaves at once in late winter, then bud furiously. This picture was shot looking essentially straight up while lying on my driveway, on a fabulouly clear, cool morning.

birthday snow
Monday, February 15, 2021
The Big Freeze

The Polar Vortex brought us snow on my birthday! This shows the flurries in early morning (around 8 a.m.), before it calmed down and cleared up. The power outage came later in the day, lasting 41 hours. We pretty much depleted our supply of wood for the fire pit, burning it in the fireplace instead, while huddling under blankets in the living room. An inconvenience to be sure, but others weren't nearly so fortunate.

pillar decorated with ribbon
Wednesday, December 16, 2020
A New Look for the Entryway Pillar

I've been wrapping the pillar in the front entryway for decades to evoke a candy cane. This year, after looking at various styles of striping on candy canes, I chose a slightly different scheme, which also took advantage of the ribbon widths I ordered online (because all the wide ribbon in the stores is too glitzy or kitschy). This view shows a close-up of the pillar with the decorated fireplace and Christmas tree in the background. Our best pillar yet!

bird briner
Wednesday, November 25, 2020
Thanksgiving Day Preparations

This might look like a standard drink cooler, like those found on the sidelines of a football game, filled with Gatorade. But it isn't. This is actually a turkey briner. This vessel not only holds a large turkey with brine, but it does so with a minimum of volume (no more trying to submerge a turkey in a trash bag in a big cooler), and with more efficient thermal retention (i.e., it stays cold longer). How's that for an ingenious idea?

halloween party food
Saturday, October 31, 2020
Halloween Party for Two

Feeling somewhat nostalgic for the Halloween parties of old (especially with the pandemic curtailing all social interaction), we decided to throw ourselves a little Halloween party featuring the 'classic' party food we used to serve at such things. Clockwise from lower left: spinach-ricotta mini-pastries topped with pine nuts; chili-lime shrimp; beef and scallion cheese ball with crackers; more pastries (behind the wine goblet); crudité platter with ranch dip and roasted red pepper hummus; meatballs in marinara. Wish you could be here.

Some Interesting Clouds at Sunset

The rain abated just in time for the setting sun to illuminate the roiling clouds, framed by the neighborhood trees as seen looking S from the back yard.

Monday, May 25, 2020
Continuing Projects in the Back Yard
On Memorial Day, we finished the right-hand section of the back bed along the fence. This view shows our handiwork in the background, with newly-potted rose bushes residing in the octagon in the foreground. Would that the rest of the yard looked this nice.

sprucing up the center bed
Saturday, May 9, 2020
Tackling Some Backyard Chores
Some nice Spring weather gave us the opportunity to tackle some much-needed backyard tasks. One was to completely weed the central octagon bed and put new mulch down. We also pruned a bunch of stems from the large crepe myrtle in the center of the bed. Much nicer. (The back beds against the fence are on the list, but they're a later project.)
working from home
Tuesday, April 21, 2020
Working From Home
As with many people during the COVID-19 pandemic, I'm telecommuting. I cleared a swath on my cluttered desk in the bedroom to fit the work laptop and keyboard, and I'm in the middle of processing some drawing redlines. You can tell I'm working because I'm wearing a polo instead of a t-shirt. (Never mind the shorts.)
roof replacement
Friday, November 8, 2019
A Long-Awaited Roof Replacement
Despite the forecast that predicted rain in the morning, the crew showed up grey and early to begin taking off the old roof and installing the new one. The rain held off. Check out the full photo spread in About the House.
rainbow
Friday, May 31, 2019
Spring Rainbow
An early evening thunderstorm in late May ended with this vibrant rainbow arcing down to the local water tower. (No, we didn't check for a pot of gold.) Brief afternoon storms are a common occurrence in the spring and summer on the Gulf coast.
Hyundai Santa Fe
Thursday, March 7, 2019
Mark's New Car
Alas, I reached the point with the old Malibu where it was simply no longer cost-effective to pour money into repairs. Here is its replacement, a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe SEL Plus in a nice color called 'Stormy Sea.' Coincidentally, the Malibu turned 22 the day after I bought the Hyundai.

at the Alamo
Monday, February 18, 2019
Birthday Weekend in San Antonio
First item on the agenda after breakfast on Monday was the tour of the Alamo. The weather was sunny but a bit chilly with a stiff breeze. (Naturally, there's a photographer at the front entrance to the Alamo church waiting to take our picture as we enter.) After touring the grounds and the gift shop, we walked up to the RiverCenter Mall for some shopping and lunch.
mulching the front bed
Saturday, January 26, 2019
Front Bed Improvements
With at least one weekend of usable weather in late January, we managed to install the divider that defines the boundary between the mulch and the rock in the front bed, next to the entryway. The newly-spread Texas red cedar mulch nearly matches the color of the metal divider, and also fills in areas where the ground has settled. Next job is filling in the rock area, but that might have to wait until Spring.

after the presents
Tuesday, December 25, 2018
After the Presents
That all changed the next morning. The presents are unwrapped and the stockings emptied, as the piles of paper, ribbon, bows, and packing materials will attest. Imagine what that pile would look like if there were more than two people opening gifts this morning.

presents under the Christmas tree
Monday, December 24, 2018
Presents 'Neath the Tree
On Christmas Eve, the area under the tree is so chock full of presents that you can barely see the tree skirt. Visible in the picture are some of the tree ornaments from our rather eclectic collection, each of which tells a story, either of our various interests or of the places we've been. Near the bottom of the tree from left to right, you can see an Imperial Shuttle from Star Wars, a six-pack of Alaskan Amber, a cute little Washington State ferry, and a Starfleet Runabout from DS9. Above the ferry is the Enterprise-D from ST:TNG, and behind the runabout is a TIE fighter, partially obscured by the Sitka ornament representing St. Michaels Cathedral. At the top of the frame, above the six-pack, is our ornament from Maui, next to the Mexican maraca.

santa on the fire engine
Saturday, December 15, 2018
Santa Arrives in Friendswood
In an annual tradition, Santa hops a ride on a local fire engine to tour the neighborhoods. In previous years, the tour took place in the evening, but this year saw Santa and his helpers on a bright Saturday morning.

crepe myrtle
Saturday, June 30, 2018
Crepe Myrtle in Bloom
The centerpiece of the back yard, Gertrude, our crepe myrtle, blooming furiously in late June. The nice thing about crepe myrtles is that they bloom several times a year. And, unlike the first spring bloom this year, Gertrude has remained in bloom since this picture was taken, just not quite as full as this.

Maker's Mark in Astros colors
Tuesday, June 26, 2018
A Bottle of Bourbon
This is what a bottle of Maker's Mark Bourbon looks like in Houston. How cool is that? (For those of you that don't get the reference, the normal wax seal on the MM bottle is red; the orange and blue wax celebrates the Houston Astros.)

wenatchee trail
Saturday, May 12
The Wenatchee River at Leavenworth, Washington
A morning hike along the trail on Blackbird Island in Leavenworth's Waterfront Park brought us to this view of the Wenatchee River with the Cascades in the background. I think this would make a nice jigsaw puzzle, or even serve as my desktop wallpaper.

red rose
Saturday, March 31
The newly-potted rosebush displays its first flowers of the early Spring, and also provides us an opportunity to play with the close-up features of the digital camera.

first quarter
Sunday, March 25
A waxing quarter moon rises in the evening, as seen through the branches of the as-yet unblooming pecan tree in the front yard. The first full moon of Spring would appear the following weekend, heralding the arrival of Easter Sunday.

pizza toppings
Saturday, February 24
At the 5th annual pizza party, guests set out their various toppings on the table for all to peruse and choose, making quite an array of various ingredients, some traditional and some not. Bowls, stick-on labels and a fine-point marker help identify those toppings which might not be immediately obvious. (Photo by Allison Ernst)

snowing in Kirkland
Monday, December 25, 2017, around 6:30 a.m. PST
It snowed in Kirkland, Washington on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, leaving about 4 inches of the white stuff all over. Very pretty, and a perfect Christmas gift for us visiting from the Gulf coast (although we had snow more recently than they did). This shows a view of my brother's house as seen from the cul-de-sac, lights a-glow and big, fluffy flakes gently falling.

snow in back yard
Friday, December 8, 2017, just after 7 a.m.
It snowed! Looking at the backyard from the open kitchen door (I didn't have shoes on). Thursday night's forecast mentioned rain and the possibility of sleet or hail, so waking up to snow on Friday was something of a surprise, especially since we haven't seen any of the white stuff down here since about 2011.

champion t-shirt
Monday, November 6, 2017
On November 1, 2017, the Houston Astros defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 to win their first World Series Championship, as celebrated on the front of my official t-shirt. Only had to wait in line 20 minutes on Friday, November 3, to get the tee, but that was much shorter than the line on Thursday, the morning after the game. Way to go, Astros!

ghost in the tree
Monday, October 30, 2017
We decided to put up a few Halloween decorations this year, including the ghost that hangs from the oak tree in the front yard. Morning sun (on a beautiful Fall day) and a light breeze helped the ghost "pose" for the shot.

street flooding
Sunday, August 27, 2017
Water is up over the curb at the intersection of Webelos Road and Boy Scout Drive, thanks to the rainfall from Tropical Storm Harvey. At this point, the worst of the rain was yet to come. Check out the TS Harvey pictures under the About the House tab.

full moon at Galveston
Saturday, August 5, 2017
Old friends and coworkers met on the beach on Galveston Island to reminisce and swap stories in an annual celebration. The event carried through the afternoon and well into the evening, long enough for a full moon to rise over the Gulf of Mexico. (Photo by Henry Greene)
Veendam at Hamilton
Wednesday, July 12, 2017
Our home away from home, Holland America's ms Veendam, shown docked in Hamilton, Bermuda as we come back in from our snorkeling excursion. The cruise itinerary gave us 3 days in Bermuda, with nearly 2 days of sailing on either end.
crepe myrtle
Tuesday, June 27, 2017
Gertrude, the crepe myrtle that serves as the centerpiece of our back yard, is in full bloom in late June. The slightly lighter pink in the lower left are the blooms from her offshoot, Opheila. I somehow managed to capture direct sunlight between the several rain storms that came through that day.
at Nahiku
Tuesday, July 16, 2016
One of our side trips during our drive of the Hana Road in Maui took us down to Nahiku, on the coast, where we took more pictures of sparkling blue water, white surf and black lava rock. I think if Maui had a flag, it would look like the flag of Estonia, but with the bottom two stripes reversed.
sunrise in Mexico
Monday, January 30, 2017
Seabirds roost on an abandoned pier along Mexico's Riviera Maya, as the sun rises and rain clouds darken the horizon.
morning walk
Monday, April 3, 2017
Out for a morning walk on a pleasant Spring day along the neighborhood path that winds around the wooded drainage depression. At this time of day, this stretch of the walking trail is completely shaded.
interior of the new fridge
Sunday, March 26, 2017
After the new fridge was delivered and installed, we took this picture of the interior layout while the unit chilled down to operating temperature. It'll probably never be this clean again.
mayan riviera
Tuesday, January 31, 2017
At the Excellence Riviera Cancun, looking toward the beach and the Caribbean beyond, from the upper walkway just off the main lobby, with a glimpse of the bar pool and a jacuzzi in the lower right. Nice place, and we thoroughly enjoyed our winter break in sunny Mexico.
from our lanai
Wednesday, July 20, 2016
This is what we had to wake up to each morning on vacation: a view of the western shore of Maui looking SSW toward the island of Lanai. Sometimes we spotted sea turtles in the green band of water next to the beach.
missouri
Saturday, May 28, 2016
I spent a few days visiting my friend Larry in rural south-central Missouri. (Very rural--he's 5 miles from the nearest paved road.) This is a view looking west from his backyard. Rolling hills, plenty of trees--very green and tranquil, aside from the ATVs that the neighbor kids rode around on all day.
octagon planter
Saturday, May 7, 2016
With many of the plants in bloom, and good morning sun, I decided to snap a couple of pix of the center "octagon" bed in the backyard. This view shows hibiscus and society garlic along the fence, rosemary in the pot on the stand, an empty swan planter, and chives. The thick clump of stems is the crepe myrtle.
new garage shelves
Wednesday, March 23, 2016
The primary goal of my week off from work in March was to install more shelves in the garage. It took the first two days to move everything away from the wall, but the rest of it went up fairly quickly.

Christmas Tree
December 6, 2015
For the first time since moving into the house, we put up an artificial tree. This was a 7-foot pre-lit Noble Fir, with lots and lots of lights. It looked really nice, very realistic, and we didn't even have to water it.

hotel galvez
September 5, 2015
For our Labor Day Weekend Getaway, we stayed at the historic Hotel Galvez on Galveston Island, seen here from the sidewalk on the other side of Seawall Boulevard. It was overcast and warm that Saturday, but Sunday was clear and sunny.

July 14, 2015
At the end of our dinner cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway, the sun finally decided to peek out from the clouds, bathing the high-rises in golden light.

tour boats on the river
April 3, 2015
It being a Friday night on a holiday weekend, the tour boats plying the San Antonio River were doing a booming business. This shows the loading station at the Marriott Rivercenter just before 9 p.m., underneath the walkway that connects to the Rivercenter Mall.

Christmas morning in Kirkland, Washington. Presents are under the tree and waiting to be opened.

new sidewalk
October 11, 2014
The contractor poured the new front sidewalk on Tuesday, October 7. The new walkway is both wider and longer. It looks nice, much better than the old, broken one.

sunset
Sunday, August 10, 2014
We spent a Sunday evening out on a wine-tasting cruise on Clear Lake and Galveston Bay. There were just enough clouds in the west to make the sunset interesting.

at the ranch
Saturday, November 2, 2013
At Jennifer's Mom's ranch in Navasota on a very nice fall day. We had lunch at the ranch before driving over to the Bernhardt Winery for a tasting. The weather could not have been better.

a fire burns in the firepit on the patio
Sunday, April 17, 2011
Taking advantage of an unusually pleasant Spring, we sat outside after dinner one Sunday evening and enjoyed the fire blazing in the fire-pit at the corner of the patio.

mark on the mountain, with condos from the base in the background
Friday, January 30, 2009
Bobby snapped this picture of me when he, Shannon, and I were on the Vogue run on the first morning of the trip. The zoom setting really captures the elevation of the run above the base.

patio furniture covered with snow
Wednesday, December 10, 2008
A rare snowfall for the Houston area. Cold temperatures gave way to rain, then sleet, and finally wet snow as the afternoon turned to evening. It was still snowing when I snapped this picture of the patio furniture at 10 p.m.

the bed along the back fence
From the backyard - Sunday, October 19, 2008
A long run of decent fall weather gave us an opportunity to spend some time in the yard. Here, the results of our labors showing the middle of the bed along the back fence, with new mulch and some new potted plants.

downed fences in my backyard
From the backyard - Saturday, September 13, 2008
Hurricane Ike barreled through in early morning, a direct hit. We went out to check for damage after it got light enough to see. Taken just before 10 a.m., this shows fences and tree limbs down in the backyard, damage typical of the whole neighborhood. My neighbor's back fence is also in pieces, but my back fence survived intact. At the time this photo was taken, it was still pretty windy (25-30 mph) and still raining slightly.

strolling along the cove
The Waterfront of Porto Cristo, Majorca - Wednesday, May 14, 2008
After visiting the Caves of Drach, the bus stopped at the clean and colorful town of Porto Cristo, on the east coast of Majorca. The weather was perfect. I snapped this shot of the walkway and park adjacent to the small beach and boat harbor.

the famous leaning tower in the plaza at Pisa, Italy
Pisa, Italy - Saturday, May 10, 2008
Lauri snapped this picture of the famous tower during our first excursion of the Mediterranean cruise (Lucca in the morning, Pisa in the afternoon). Recent stabilization efforts have halted the tilting of the tower, so tourists are once more allowed to climb to the top balcony (for a nominal fee, of course).

the boat harbor at Avalon on Catalina Island
Avalon - Tuesday, May 1, 2007
Catalina was our first port of call on my high school reunion cruise. I snapped this picture of the harbor and "casino" shortly before returning to the ship in mid-afternoon, after the sun had come out.
Minute Maid Park, before the start of the concert
Jimmy Buffett Concert - Saturday, April 21, 2007
From our seats in the upper deck of Minute Maid Park beyond 3rd base, we can see the whole stage in center field and the thousands of seats set up in the outfield. The roof is open and it's a nice spring day in Houston.
Kris, Tim, Todd, Randy, Shannon, Julie, Me (Bobby's taking the picture)
Steamboat Springs - Tuesday, January 30, 2007
Or maybe it was Monday. I don't remember which day was what. Anyway, Bobby snapped a picture of (from left) Kris, Tim, Todd, Randy, Shannon, Julie and me while we were up on the slopes at Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Lauri says it looks like a Cingular ad. (I've cropped the picture somewhat, as Bobby didn't have the zoom in very far.)

The Texas state capital building in Austin
Austin - Friday, July 14, 2006
A long-weekend getaway in mid July took us to Austin, our first trip to that city. We spent Friday walking around downtown and took the tour of the capital. After a little cropping (too much driveway in the original) this turned out to be quite a nice shot.

a view of my front porch on a balmy April morning
Friendswood - Saturday, April 15, 2006
This picture was taken on a warm spring morning, primarily to test the camera after adjusting the resolution to 1600 x 1200 in anticipation of the upcoming trip. (I had been using the camera at 1280 x 960 since I bought it, but decided this vacation might benefit from more pixels.) Of, course, you can't tell from this photo because all my digital pictures are scaled to 640 x 480 for the website.
view from the top of the 'Sundance' run on Monday, January 30 at Telluride
Telluride - Monday, January 30, 2006
After the unrelenting snow of Sunday, a perfect day for skiing. This picture was taken near the top of the "Sundance" run at Telluride. Yes, it's a blue, and yes, I skiied down this run to the bottom. It's a nice run--smooth and wide, with slightly shallower stretches in-between the steeper ones. Considering how long it took to ride the lift to the top of this run, I was surprised how quickly we (that is to say I) made it to the bottom.

Christmas morning snow
White Christmas in Houston, December 25, 2004. A fluke weather system dumped the white stuff along the gulf coast Christmas Eve, leaving us with a dusting of snow in the morning.

The Walla Walla Ferry

The Walla Walla docks in Bremerton. I was next door, getting ready to board the foot ferry to Seattle. Yeah, it was raining a little. Friday, March 14, Puget Sound, Washington.

Another ski photo

Yes, the picture is a bit blurry. That's because it's snowing, and the photographer (whoever he was--we snagged him coming off the lift) was facing into the wind to take the photo. Me, Helen, Mel, Terry, Jenn and Richard pose at the top of the Prospector lift, with the Jack Kendrick run in the background. For Jenn, Helen and me, this was the last ski run of the trip.(Sunday afternoon, February 2, Winter Park, Colorado.)

Group ski photo

Two-thirds of the ski group gather in front of the artificial bonfire at Zephyr Mountain Lodge, before hitting the slopes. Pictured: Richard, Albert, Gayle, Jennifer (barely visible behind Bobby), Bobby, Shannon, Allison, me. (Bob, Helen, Terry and Melanie were still in their room.) Taken Saturday, February 1, 2003.
